Nodate Utensils

Outdoor Tea Ceremony (Nodate) Utensils

Nodate refers to preparing and enjoying tea outdoors. Savoring matcha while feeling the breath of nature carried by the wind—this is a uniquely Japanese form of luxury, made all the more special by the country’s four beautiful seasons.

Gosho-Kago (Portable Tea Utensil Basket)

A gosho-kago is a basket used to carry essential tea utensils for nodate, including the tea bowl(chawan), the tea whisk(chasen), and more. Why not gather your favorite tools, place them in the basket, follow your heart and set off in the direction the wind takes you?

Furo (Portable Brazier)

In outdoor tea gatherings, a furo is used to boil water, as a sunken hearth (ro) is not available outside. Boiling water in the open air and preparing tea amidst natural surroundings fosters a calm and elevated state of mind.

The furo pictured here is a Shigaraki-ware square furo, known for its rustic charm and earthy hues.

Tetsubin (Iron Kettle)

While commonly referred to as kettles or teapots, in tea practice, tetsubin (iron kettles) and ginbin (silver kettles) are used. As they are seasoned over time, their appearance subtly changes, offering the joy of appreciating and nurturing your tools as living companions in the art of tea.
