Tokonoma / Alcove Decorations
In a traditional Japanese-style room (zashiki), the tokonoma is the alcove where decorative items such as hanging scrolls, incense containers(kogo), and flower vases are displayed. Every tea room is equipped with a tokonoma, and upon entering the tea space, guests first approach and observe the display in the alcove as a gesture of respect.
Tokonoma types are categorized by their form, position, and size, with different names and meanings accordingly.
Hanging Scrolls (Kakemono)
A kakemono is a hanging scroll displayed in the tokonoma (alcove) of a tea room, and it is considered the most highly respected item in the setting. The scroll reflects a message from the host and represents the theme of the tea gathering.
There are various types of scrolls, including those with only calligraphy, such as ichigyōmono (single-line phrases) and yokomono (horizontal text), as well as gasan, which combine both painting and calligraphy.
At Sankyodou, we can research the meaning and origin of your scroll upon request. (Please note that a small fee may apply for complex or rare texts.) We also offer services for scroll mounting and restoration.
Incense Containers (Kogo)
A kogo is a lidded container used to hold incense. During the sumi-demae (charcoal procedure), a kogo is placed inside the sumitori (charcoal container). When the charcoal procedure is omitted, it is displayed in the tokonoma atop a paper mat (kamigama-shiki) or a folded silk cloth (fukusa).
For ro (sunken hearth), ceramic containers are used to hold kneaded incense(neriko), while for furo (portable brazier), wooden or lacquered containers are used for fragrant woods (koboku). Additionally, there are multi-purpose kogo made from materials like shells or tsuishu (a curving on layered coats of red lacquer), suitable for both ro and furo.
Flower Vases (Hana-ire)
A hana-ire is a vase used to display chabana (flowers appropriate for tea ceremonies or tea house) during a tea ceremony. Materials include metal, porcelain, pottery, and bamboo baskets.
Types of hana-ire include:
・Kake-hana-ire: hanging vases, placed on a hook (kugi) in the wall or on a tokobashira (alcove pillar)
・Tsuri-hana-ire: suspended from the ceiling or a decorative beam
・Oki-hana-ire: placed directly on the floor of the tokonoma
